Aevice Health: How the world’s smallest wearable stethoscope transforms asthma treatment

Asthma is one of the most widespread respiratory diseases, affecting more than 260 million people worldwide. While genetic factors play a role, asthma is also strongly influenced by stress levels, physical activity, and air quality. It is linked to an estimated 455,000 fatal cases annually, with most premature deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries where the condition often remains underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Limited knowledge and access to asthma treatment for many people are the reasons why the number of cases and deaths remain relatively high. A deep understanding of asthma is crucial for improving the lives of those living with the condition. This chronic respiratory disease affects individuals of all ages, from children to adults and the elderly.

In commemoration of World Asthma Day on 6 May, asthma treatment can be approached in several ways, from taking medication and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to self-examination using a wearable stethoscope that can be used to monitor the condition of the respiratory system.

Helping people “breathe better” through a wearable stethoscope

The wearable stethoscope is an innovation that significantly saves patients’ time in managing their health conditions. One product featuring this technology is AeviceMD.

Developed by the Singapore-based company, Aevice Health, this handy device is designed to help individuals with respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), to monitor their health independently at home.

Aevice Health, founded in 2018 by Adrian Ang and Dr. Rex Tan, is redefining the way chronic respiratory diseases are managed through cutting-edge medical technology. At the core of its innovations is the AeviceMD Monitoring System, an end-to-end platform designed for continuous, remote monitoring of patients with chronic respiratory conditions

Bringing the clinic closer to home, AeviceMD Monitoring System transforms the traditional stethoscope into a smart, connected, and user-friendly device. Patients and caregivers can perform auscultations [action of listening to sounds from the lungs] at home using the AeviceMD sensor and easily share the recordings with their healthcare providers. Then, doctors can analyze the data remotely, detect abnormalities, and offer timely medical advice, enabling proactive, at-home management of respiratory health.

AeviceMD has received U.S FDA Class II clearance under the 510(k) route, authorizing the company to commercialize its platform in the United States. This clearance paves the way for Aevice Health to extend its remote respiratory monitoring solution to health systems nationwide, improving access to convenient and effective lung health assessment both in clinical and home environments.

“With this clearance, we take a significant stride towards becoming the equivalent of continuous glucose monitors for diabetes, but for respiratory health — a patient-centric, affordable, and accessible solution that empowers patients to achieve a healthy recovery from the comfort of their homes,” Adrian Ang, Co-Founders and CEO of Aevice Health said.

What’s next for asthma treatment?

Respiratory care has long been a vital aspect of healthcare, particularly for individuals living with chronic conditions such as asthma and COPD.

In recent years, the field has undergone a remarkable transformation fueled by advances in medical technology. Innovative tools and data-driven platforms are reshaping how respiratory diseases are diagnosed, monitored, and treated, making care more accurate, efficient, and patient-centered than ever before.

In the future, with ongoing technological advancements, several developments are likely to revolutionize the medical industry around the world, particularly through the rise of healthtech and innovations in respiratory treatment.

1. Predictive analysis and personalized care through AI

Recently, Aevice Health announced a strategic collaboration with Jiva.ai, an AI platform that combines AI capabilities with Aevice Health’s proprietary remote patient monitoring device. This integration will analyze key respiratory biomarkers in real time.

Aevice Health and Jiva.ai aim to create a user-friendly care solution that integrates seamlessly into patients’ daily lives, enabling them to take a proactive role in managing their respiratory health.

AI and machine learning are also transforming respiratory care by enabling healthcare professionals to make faster and more accurate clinical decisions.

These technologies can process vast amounts of data to uncover patterns and predict potential complications before they escalate. For instance, AI-powered systems can interpret real-time data from ventilators and monitoring devices to detect early signs of respiratory distress, allowing for timely interventions.

Additionally, by analyzing patient-specific information, AI can support the development of personalized treatment plans, resulting in more precise, responsive, and effective care tailored to each individual’s condition.

2. Enhancing medication adherence

One of the major challenges in managing respiratory conditions such as asthma is ensuring consistent medication adherence from the patient. Smart inhalers are helping to solve this problem by incorporating sensors that monitor usage and send timely reminders to patients.

These devices also collect valuable data that can be shared with healthcare providers, allowing them to track adherence patterns and make informed adjustments to treatment plans for better patient outcomes.

The integration of technology into respiratory treatment goes far beyond convenience—it’s fundamentally improving patient outcomes and quality of life. From intelligent medical devices to streamlined care delivery, these innovations are reshaping how respiratory conditions are managed, making treatments more precise, accessible, and effective.
